Description

What if we could hand make our computers?  Learn about the most fundamental building blocks of computing. This is where electricity meets logic, where hardware connects with software. In this hands-on workshop, we will learn to solder and assemble a 1-Bit Computer with discrete components: switch, LED, resistor, capacitor, and NAND (which is short for not AND logic) Integrated Circuit chip. We will also explore the fundamental theory of computation, by combining NAND gates in various arrangements to make every possible binary logic pattern. We will each build a 1-Bit Computer kit prototype with Half-Adder, Latch, and Clock.   This workshop is geared for someone without prior experience of electronics or computation, however experienced hackers are welcome to join as well. 1-Bit Computer Kit is a part of a work in progress, Handmade Computer by Taeyoon Choi. Pedro G. C. Oliveira who collaborated on the design of 1-Bit Computer Kit will co-teach the workshop with Choi.   1-Bit Computer Kit and tools will be provided. Bring your own soldering iron if you prefer to use your own.    Instructors  Taeyoon Choi is an artist, educator, and activist based in New York and Seoul. His art practice involves performance, electronics, drawings, and installations that form the basis for storytelling in public spaces. He co-founded the School for Poetic Computation where he continues to organize sessions and teach classes.  Pedro G. C. Oliveira is a Brazilian Art Director, Interactive Designer and Researcher based in New York City. His work history combines experiences in visual-effects, graphic design and motion graphics, interfaces and applications, interactive installations and code-generated art pieces. It is his strong belief, that creative solutions should be merged with technological resources and information not only in the name of innovation, but also to stimulate human potential and to improve human relations.
