Messages from the Mud

The second publication from the Reading into the Past / Writing into the Future class taught by teacher Ashley Jane Lewis and assistant teacher Carey J. Flack. Each class culminates in a collectively made publication featuring original writings informed by the science fiction of authors like Octavia Butler, Ruha Benjamin, NK Jemisin, and Robin Wall Kimmerer. Inspired by guest teacher Ryan C. Clarke, this volume is titled Messages from the Mud. “Mud lumps are low mounds of clay or silt on a delta like that of the Mississippi river; formations that bubble up from the deep, created by the sheer weight of settling of deposits. Mud lumps are a tangible way to dream of a new thing; a new other. The Earth is trying to dream alongside us. We’re really in this kind of dialogue with nature," according to Clarke. Mud—a viscous, gelatinous, gurgling mass, and a fluid metaphor for birthing new ideas! Publication designed by Jackie Liu.
